Robert Downey Jr has revealed that he was "begging" for the chance to playIron Man.
The 48-year-old told Variety that nerves were not a factor in deciding to accept the role as part of the Iron Man and Avengers films.
"Nervous? I was begging. I was absolutely certain [Iron Man] would change my life," Downey Jr said.
The actor - also famed for playing Sherlock Holmes - went on to explain why age is an important factor for the franchise and believes someone younger will inevitably take his place in the future.
"The smart money is you have to look at everybody's age. I'll put myself at the top of the list. Sooner or later, they've got to start over and get somebody young.
I'm not there with them yet. It really is the closest thing to being a beloved contract player with a big old- timey studio that there is right now. When you really think about it at the end of the day, these films are entertainment largely driven by young folks. There is something very honorable about that.
Downey Jr also defended comic book superhero roles and refuted claims that it could once hurt your career.
"Christopher Reeve went on and did a bunch of other great movies, and his notoriety from the Superman franchise helped that, and nobody held it against him," he argued.
"But the other thing is, everybody knows Chris Reeve was a really good guy. A lot of it has to do with personality."
The actor also confessed that he is a fan of Captain America star Chris Evans, who recently expressed a desire to quit acting and focus on directing when his contract expires.
